Frequently asked questions

Question:  Which product fits my application best?

Answer: Choosing the correct fluid control system for your application is a multi-step process. Flowrate, pulsation, and accuracy requirements must be taken into account. The best way to choose the correct product is to consult Encynova.

Question: What is the difference between Travcyl™ and NovaSpense™?

Answer: Travcyl describes the pump technology Encynova uses in all its products. Travcyl is a contraction of the words "traveling" and "cylinder". Click here to read more about NovaSpense™.

NovaSpense is the proprietary algorithm Encynova has developed for the Travcyl. Encynova characterizes each pump, which is then used along with the algorithm to optimize dispensing accuracy. NovaSpense is available in three configurations: End User, Satellite, and OEM. Click here to read more about Encynova technology.

Question: Can I use LABVIEW to run your pumps?

Answer: Novaspense™ can be run off LABVIEW. For ease of integration, Encynova supplies a .DLL file with examples of its use in LABVIEW and Visual Basic. Please note that Novaspense™ uses RS485 to communicate. If your computer does not have RS485, Encynova can supply an optional RS232/RS485 converter with a VB control program that runs off Windows 95 or newer platforms.

Question: What type of motor is supplied with a Travcyl™ pump?

Answer: The Travcyl™ can be coupled to several types of motors. Our standard motor is an intelligent servomoter. These motors are ideal for system integration because they provide a complete package (internal encoder and drivers) in a small footprint and are easily controlled using RS485 communication (8-bit ASCII). All Novaspense™ products use these motors to achieve the highest repeatability and accuracy. For applications that don't require absolute accuracy, Encynova can provide stepper motors. The 2-1 is also available with a DC gear motor.

Question: What if I want to use my own motor?

Answer: The Travcyl™ can be mounted to many different motors. Some slight modification may be necessary for proper coupling. Please call Encynova with your specific questions.

Question: What is the maximum RPM the Travcyl™ can run?

Answer: All Travcyl™ pumps are rated at a max RPM of 200. If your application falls outside our published specs, please give us a call. We have a few customers that are running at higher speeds successfully.

Question: What is the power consumption of the Travcyl?™

Answer: The 2-1 pump consumes 10 watts of electrical power. The 2-4 pump consumes 120 watts. The 16-4 consumes 200 watts.

Question: What is the maximum volumetric rate?

Answer: The Travcyl™ is available in 4 sizes.

Model
Flow Rate (ml/min)
16 - 4
0 - 1200
16 - 2
0 - 600
2 - 4
0 - 200
2 - 1
0 - 40

Question: What viscosities can the Travcyl™ handle?

Answer: The Travcyl™ pump routinely handles viscosity up to 30,000 cps. However, Encynova has one application that greatly exceeds that level. The fluid at room temperature has a viscosity of well over 1,000,000 cps! We designed a custom manifold and the fluid is pressurized to 45 psi at the inlet. Travcyl™ pumps have millions of cycles operating under these conditions.

Question: What range of pH can the Travcyl™ handle?

Answer: Our chemically inert pump utilizes Teflon™, PEEK™, Tefzel™, and perfluoroelastomers. This combination allows the Travcyl™ to handle of wide range of strong acids and bases.

Question: Can the Travcyl™ handle abrasives and/or suspended solids?

Answer: One of the key seals in the Travcyl™ can be found between our ceramic plates. These highly polished surfaced can scratch. Size, shape, and concentration of the particles effect the answer to this question. Please consult with the factory if your application contains particles. The specific compound may have to be analyzed and tested by Encynova's engineering team to determine compatibility.

Question: What kinds of fittings can be used with the Travcyl™ pump?

Answer: Below is a chart outlining the standard connections of the Travcyl™ pump. If you applications require something different, please consult the factory. We can accommodate a wide range of sizes and types.

Model

16 - 4
1/8" NPT
16 - 2

Question: Can NovaSpense™ be integrated into existing liquid filling equipment?

Answer: Yes, NovaSpense™ is coupled to an intelligent servomotor. These motors provide a complete package in a small footprint. An internal encoder, drivers, and RS485 communication make them ideal for system integration. Simple 8-bit ASCII codes are used to drive pump.

Question: Can the Travcyl™ be used as a ratio pump?

Answer: With two Travcyl™ pumps your ability to ratio fluids is almost limitless.

If you want to use just one Travcyl™, Encynova can provide a 4-channel manifold. This will give you 4 inlets and 4 outlets. Depending on plumbing, you can achieve a 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 ratio. Please note in the 2:1 ratio arrangement, water needs to be re-circulated through the unused cylinder. This is done to keep the unused cylinder wetted. If a cylinder is run dry for a prolonged period of time the seals will fail.
